Terex PT70 expert review

Overview
The Terex PT70 sits in that awkward but useful zone between smaller surface-friendly track loaders and bigger, more expensive contractor machines. On paper, it has enough lift and enough engine to look promising. In practice, it offers real usefulness for grading, loading, site cleanup, and general support work, especially where low ground pressure still matters. But as a 3-star machine, it is more of a practical used-market option than a standout class leader.
Powered by a turbocharged Perkins 804C-33T diesel producing 52.95 kW, the PT70 delivers a 1,247.38 kg lifting capacity and a 3,578 kg operating weight. With low 0.26 bar ground pressure and a relatively compact 1.68 m width over tracks, it has the ingredients of a good mixed-duty compact track loader, especially for contractors working on softer fill, lawns, or rougher sites that still need some surface care.
Performance & Efficiency
The PT70 has enough muscle to be genuinely useful in everyday contractor work. A lifting capacity of 1,247.38 kg gives it enough room for pallets, soil, spoil, cleanup work, and medium-duty site support without feeling too light for the job. It is not a high-output production monster, but it does enough to feel serious.
Hydraulic flow of 75.7 L/min is practical rather than spectacular. That gives the PT70 enough hydraulic ability for buckets, trenchers, augers, and typical contractor attachments, but it does not push into the kind of numbers that make people brag in yard conversations. Relief valve pressure of 206.84 bar gives the system decent usable force, and the 55-degree rack-back angle helps hold loads securely while moving around site.
Maximum forward speed of 11.27 km/h is acceptable, but it is not one of this machine’s star selling points. The bigger real-world advantage is the 0.26 bar ground pressure. That is what makes the PT70 work well on soft fill, damp ground, lawn edges, and more delicate surfaces where a heavier or more aggressive CTL can leave a mess behind.
Maintenance & Ownership
The PT70 makes sense mainly as a carefully chosen used machine. The Perkins 804C-33T is a known engine platform, and that helps, but the real story in ownership is still the undercarriage, tracks, rollers, and hydraulic condition. This is not a machine to buy because the seller took flattering photos and parked it on clean gravel.
Fuel capacity of 68.13 L and hydraulic capacity of 79.49 L give it enough onboard capacity for real workdays, and the machine is large enough to stay relevant on active contractor sites. But at this age and rating, buyers need to be realistic. A good PT70 can still work and earn. A tired PT70 can become the machine that keeps the workshop staff socially active.
In the AED 55,000–110,000 range, it works best for buyers who want a softer-ground contractor loader with decent lift and acceptable hydraulic performance, but who are also willing to inspect carefully and live with a machine that is more practical than polished.
In Cabin & Interior
The PT70’s cab is functional and a little old-school, which is not shocking for the era. With a height to the top of cab of 2.23 m, it is not especially low-profile, but it remains workable on normal contractor sites. Controls are straightforward, and the operating environment is more about getting through the shift than making the shift feel luxurious.
Operators used to newer compact track loaders will notice the age in refinement, comfort, and noise. That said, the PT70 is not trying to sell you a spa package. It is trying to be useful, and in that narrow mission, the cabin is good enough.
Safety Features
Safety here comes more from machine balance, track stance, and predictable low-ground-pressure behavior than from advanced systems. The 1.68 m width over tracks, 14 rollers per side, and low 0.26 bar ground pressure help the PT70 stay composed on soft or mixed terrain. Ground clearance of 0.38 m is also useful for regular site conditions and uneven ground.
As with any used compact track loader, the real safety conversation starts with condition. Worn tracks, tired rollers, weak hydraulics, poor visibility, and sloppy controls can turn a decent design into a headache quickly. On a 3-star used machine, inspection is not a nice bonus. It is the whole survival strategy.
In Comparison
Caterpillar 247
A widely recognized soft-ground compact track loader with broader market familiarity and more mainstream appeal. Usually easier to explain and easier to resell.
Caterpillar 249
A close comparison for contractor work with similar site role and stronger market confidence in many cases.
Terex PT70
The more value-driven option for buyers who care about flotation and practical lift, but who are willing to accept a machine that feels more workmanlike than polished.
Verdict
Rated 3 stars, the Terex PT70 is a workable compact track loader for buyers who need decent lift, low ground pressure, and practical contractor performance without spending on a more polished mainstream machine. It still makes sense for grading, loading, cleanup, and mixed support work on softer terrain.
In the AED 55,000–110,000 range, it fits best as a value-oriented used buy rather than a premium long-term bet. It can absolutely earn its keep, but this is one of those machines where condition matters just as much as the model name, maybe more.
