If you're bidding online, you can place a deposit via debit/credit card, or wire transfer. For on-site bidding, you can also place a deposit via debit/credit cards, wire transfers, or cash payments. You can find more information regarding this in the "How bidding works" section of an auction page.
You can place two types of bids: 1) Normal Bid: a standard bid placed as an increment over the current highest bid. You manually raise the price each time you want to bid. and 2) Max Bid: lets you set the maximum amount you're willing to pay for an item. The system will then automatically bid on your behalf, enough to keep you in the lead, until your max limit is reached. You can change or remove your max bid anytime before the auction ends.
Makana.com runs two main auction formats: live and timed, with lots that can be either reserved or unreserved. In timed auctions: lots run online for a set duration. You can place bids anytime before the auction closes. Most makana.com sales use this format, especially unreserved timed auctions, where every item sells to the highest bidder, with no minimum price. Where live auctions are real-time, event-based sales led by an auctioneer. You can join online or in person, watch bids happen live, and participate directly. In unreserved auctions, an item sells regardless of price once the auction ends. However, in reserved auctions, the seller sets a minimum price that must be met before the sale is confirmed.
