ASV SR-80 expert review

Overview
The ASV SR-80 is one of those older compact track loaders that still gets attention for a reason. It has good lift, strong hydraulics, very low ground pressure, and unusually fast travel speed for a machine in this kind of package. That makes it attractive for contractors who want real productivity without paying newer-machine money. The catch, of course, is age. This is a 3-star buy, not a blind-faith buy.
Performance & Efficiency
With 60.03 kW of gross power, 1,406.14 kg of lift, and 113.55 L/min of hydraulic flow, the SR-80 has enough muscle for loading, grading, cleanup, and serious attachment work. The standout numbers are really the low 0.22 bar ground pressure and the 20.12 km/h top speed. That combo gives it a useful edge on larger soft-ground sites where flotation matters but wasted travel time also costs money.
Maintenance & Ownership
The turbocharged Perkins 804C-33T is a known engine platform, but this machine’s real story is condition. On an older ASV, tracks, rollers, hydraulic response, leaks, and service history matter a lot more than the seller saying “runs great.” A healthy SR-80 can still be a very practical machine. A worn one can turn value into regret faster than you can say “undercarriage quote.”
In Cabin & Interior
The cab is basic, work-first, and clearly from an older generation. At 2.19 m to the top of cab, it is still manageable enough for normal contractor work, but no one is confusing it with a modern premium CTL. It is there to help you work, not impress you emotionally.
Safety Features
Safety comes mainly from predictable track behavior, low ground pressure, and a planted operating stance. Ground clearance of 0.38 m is respectable, which helps on mixed terrain. That said, real safety still comes down to actual machine condition and whether the operator treats an older machine with respect instead of optimism.
In Comparison
Caterpillar 259
A more mainstream compact track loader with stronger market familiarity and easier resale comfort.
Caterpillar 267
Another familiar contractor machine with broader nameplate confidence.
ASV SR-80
The more flotation- and speed-focused option for buyers who want soft-ground performance and useful hydraulic strength in a value-minded used package.
Verdict
Rated 3 stars, the ASV SR-80 is a capable compact track loader for contractors who want strong lift, low ground pressure, and fast movement in one machine. It works well for grading, loading, cleanup, and attachment work, especially on softer sites. It makes the most sense as a value-driven used buy, provided the condition is good enough to justify the optimism.
