Overview
The Mustang MTL20 is an older compact track loader aimed at buyers who want more lift, more bucket, and better flotation than lighter track loaders can offer, but without paying newer-machine money. It belongs to that era of equipment where the pitch was simple: give the operator enough engine, enough hydraulics, and enough undercarriage to get through ugly ground conditions and keep working.
With a turbocharged Isuzu 4JG1T diesel producing 60.03 kW, a rated lifting capacity of 1,350 kg, and breakout force of 3,357.04 kg, the MTL20 has enough real working ability for grading, bulk loading, backfilling, site cleanup, and material movement. Its operating weight of 4,350 kg and especially low ground pressure of 0.28 bar give it one of its strongest traits, the ability to stay useful on soft, wet, or disturbed ground where wheeled machines lose confidence fast.
Performance & Efficiency
The MTL20’s numbers still make sense for real work. A 1,350 kg lifting capacity is enough for heavier site materials, pallets, buckets of spoil, and broader landscaping or grading tasks than smaller loaders can comfortably handle. Its 0.61 cu m bucket also gives it better productivity in bulk material movement than lighter machines with smaller buckets.
Breakout force of 3,357.04 kg helps it dig into stockpiles and work through compacted material more confidently, while hydraulic flow of 75.32 L/min keeps it relevant for common attachment use. Relief valve pressure of 206 bar backs that up with decent hydraulic muscle, and the 59-degree rack-back angle does a good job of holding material in the bucket during travel. Maximum forward speed of 10.46 km/h is acceptable for moving around the site, even if this loader’s real trick is traction rather than speed.
Where the MTL20 earns its stripes is flotation. Ground pressure of only 0.28 bar is seriously useful on muddy, soft, or finished surfaces where heavier ground-loading machines can become expensive mistakes. For the kind of contractor dealing with fill, wet subgrades, or sloppy site conditions, that matters a lot more than pretty plastics.
Maintenance & Ownership
The MTL20 can make sense as a value buy, but only for buyers who understand older tracked equipment. This is not a machine you buy blindly because the spec sheet looks decent and the seller smiles confidently. Condition, undercarriage wear, hydraulic health, and service history matter a lot here.
The good news is that the machine is mechanically straightforward by modern standards. The turbocharged Isuzu diesel is less intimidating than many newer electronically dense engines, and the 12 V system keeps electrical basics simple. Fuel capacity of 90.08 L and hydraulic capacity of 83.27 L support decent working time, though service costs can swing hard depending on how tired the machine is.
For buyers in the AED 65,000–130,000 range, the MTL20 works best as a budget-conscious machine for soft-ground duties, occasional site work, landscaping support, or as a second loader in the fleet. It can still do useful work, but this is very much a condition-first purchase.
In Cabin & Interior
Cab comfort is not the MTL20’s selling point. Like many older compact track loaders, it was built around function first. The cab gives the operator the essentials, but not the kind of quiet, ergonomics, or low-fatigue environment people now expect from newer machines.
Still, it remains usable. The 2.19 m height to the top of cab and overall dimensions keep it practical around smaller sites, and the machine’s basic operating layout is familiar enough for operators used to older track loaders. It is not fancy, but it is workable, which is basically the unofficial slogan of aging equipment everywhere.
Safety Features
Safety is rooted more in machine stance and operator judgment than electronic assistance. The wide 1.8 m track width, low 0.28 bar ground pressure, and planted undercarriage help the MTL20 stay steady during loading and travel on rough or soft terrain. Ground clearance of 0.33 m is reasonable for mixed site conditions, though not exceptional.
As with any older track loader, a buyer should care as much about worn tracks, sloppy controls, visibility condition, and service neglect as the original brochure specs. A tired machine can turn a decent design into a nuisance fast.
In Comparison
Caterpillar 277
A well-known older CTL benchmark with strong flotation and broader market recognition. Often easier to compare against in resale and parts conversations.
Caterpillar 279
Similar soft-ground role with a more established name in the category. Depending on condition, it may offer stronger buyer confidence and support perception.
Mustang MTL20
Usually the more price-driven option. It offers useful lift, strong flotation, and solid work potential, but buyers accept more age-related compromise and condition variability.
Verdict
Rated 3 stars, the Mustang MTL20 is a capable older compact track loader for buyers who prioritize flotation, traction, and usable lifting strength over comfort and modern refinement. It still makes sense for grading, loading, site cleanup, and general soft-ground work when the machine has been maintained properly.
In the AED 65,000–130,000 range, it fits best as a value-oriented purchase rather than a premium long-term bet. It can earn its keep, but this is one of those machines where the inspection matters almost as much as the model name.
