JCB 270T expert review

Overview

The JCB 270T compact track loader is a step up from the earlier 260T and 250T models, with a few key improvements that actually matter. One of the more notable upgrades is the boost in operating load at 4.9 tons, which means it’s built to handle heavier loads like concrete blocks, logs, or construction materials without compromising on durability. The 270T also comes with a 74 HP JCB EcoMAX engine, achieving better fuel economy than its 84 hp DieselMax predecessor seen in the 260T, making it a budget-friendly go-to.

Pros High visibility with an all-around view. Lower center of gravity for better stability and handling
Cons Higher maintenance costs due to track wear. Single-boom design may not handle heavier loads

What’s new

The JCB 270T comes with some solid upgrades over its predecessors. The new tilting cabin design makes routine checks faster and easier—no more dismantling the flooring or lifting the machine just to get to the basics. Operators can access key service checkpoints like oil levels, gauges, valves, electrical components, and cooling system parts with way less hassle.

Another notable upgrade is the increased reach—up to 1.2 meters, compared to the 0.9 meters on the 250T. That extra reach means better dumping and material handling. While it’s not going to load an A40G, it does the job heaping material onto dump trailers without breaking a sweat.

Optional equipment

  • Mechanical and air suspension seats
  • Smooth Ride System (SRS)
  • High Flow auxiliary hydraulics
  • Powered quick hitch
  • Exhaust spark arrestor
  • Polycarbonate screen
  • Cab guarding
  • Engine oil pressure alarm
  • Operator enclosure-mounted fuse and relay box

Efficiency & performance

The JCB 270T brings some notable improvements when it comes to day-to-day operation. Its operating load is bumped up to 4.9 tons from the previous 4.8 tons in the 250T—not a huge leap, but enough to lift something as hefty as a 12-seater bus (though you probably shouldn't). With 2 cm less curb clearance than the 260T, now down to 23 cm, you get better stability while keeping loads steady. It’s also 20 cm narrower, which means tighter spaces aren’t a problem anymore.

Despite its eco-label, the 270T comes with a bigger 4.4L engine, edging out the 4.3L DieselMax. That means more power on tap while staying fuel-efficient, and with peak torque hitting 400 Nm (up from 362 Nm).

Maintenance is easy, thanks to the tilting cabin, allowing quick access to essential checkpoints. For those planning to use more demanding attachments like compactors, hammers, or brooms, consider the optional high-flow auxiliary hydraulic pump—otherwise, the standard pump might wear out faster under the higher pressure.

Interior & cab comfort

The 270T puts operator comfort first to get those productive hours in. Interior features include a fully adjustable air-suspended seat with lumbar support, a retractable seat belt, a storage area, an electrical socket, and a radio. In terms of controls, JCB installed electric-over-hydraulic controls and multi-function joysticks, a 7" touch screen display that provides easy access to machine data, alongside a full visual and audible warning system. With, of course, a climate control system that keeps things hot or cold. This basically means operators can expect a smooth ride and a productive workday, especially on those tough infrastructure and road building jobs where deadlines are crushing.

Safety

The new JCB doesn’t mess around when it comes to safety. It’s got full ROPS and Level 1 FOPS protection, meaning the operator is covered if something goes wrong—in case the machine tips or something falls on it. The emergency lower valve is a handy feature that kicks in if the machine becomes imbalanced or overloaded.

There are two front work lights and one at the rear, ensuring visibility isn’t compromised in low-light situations. And, if extra safety is needed, like when working in tough environments—think dense forests or rugged construction sites—the optional front guardrail offers that added layer of protection.

In comparison

As we’ve seen, the JCB 270T compact track loader builds on the foundation set by its predecessors, with key improvements and a few trade-offs. The new model offers an increased reach, bigger operating load and packs more torque and fuel efficiency compared to the older 250Ts and 260Ts.

Verdict

The JCB 270T brings real benefits to the table. With a higher load capacity and a more powerful engine, it offers efficient operation for daily users. Mechanics will appreciate the easy maintenance, and fleet managers can see value in its fuel efficiency. It’s a strong addition to medium-duty fleets, fitting well in environments like forestry, agriculture, and light urban infrastructure or construction development.
