Abu Dhabi’s Mid-Island Parkway is not a typical road project. It combines land reclamation, marine construction, underground works, bulk earthmoving and road building in one major infrastructure corridor.
The AED 2.85 billion Mid-Island Parkway Phase One is scheduled for completion in 2027. It includes an eight-lane dual carriageway connecting Saadiyat Island with Umm Yifeenah Island, 2 km of reclaimed land protected by 150,000 m² of rock, and another 1.5 km running underground. That underground section includes a 600 m underwater segment beneath Khor Laffan at a depth of 11 m.
For contractors, that combination creates demand for several classes of heavy construction machinery rather than one standard road-building fleet. Long boom excavators can work around deep and marine excavation, large excavators handle bulk material, articulated dump trucks move fill across uneven ground, while dozers, loaders, graders and rollers take over as the road formation develops.

Long boom excavators for reclamation and deep excavation

The 600 m underwater section and wider marine environment make reach and digging depth particularly relevant. Standard excavators can handle much of the general excavation, but works farther below or away from a stable operating platform can require a long boom configuration.
A strong example is the Komatsu PC850-8R1 long boom excavator. It is an 85-ton machine configured with a 16 m boom and approximately 12 m stick. According to the PC850 technical specifications, it can reach around 20 m digging depth and 26 m digging reach, with a bucket of roughly 2.1 m³.
That makes this type of excavator relevant not only to marine excavation, but also to deep cuts, dredging, slope shaping and areas where the machine needs to remain farther from an excavation edge.
For a project where reclamation and submerged infrastructure meet, long reach can be as important as bucket size.
40-ton excavators for bulk earthmoving
:quality(50)/www.makana.com/unsafe/fit-in/0x600/filters:quality(50)/www.makana.com/embedded-images/03-40-ton-excavators-for-bulk-earthmoving.png)
Once the job moves away from extended-reach work, a long boom excavator can become unnecessarily large and slow for conventional production digging.
A machine such as the Komatsu PC400-8 large excavator is better suited to high-volume excavation, loading trucks, cutting road formations and moving material around major infrastructure sites.
The PC400-8 operates in roughly the 43-ton class and can use a bucket around 2.8 m³. Its size gives contractors substantially more digging and loading capacity than a medium excavator while remaining better suited to repeated production cycles than an 85-ton long boom machine. The PC400 technical specifications provide further details for buyers comparing the different PC400 variants.
That division of work matters on projects like Mid-Island Parkway: specialised excavators can handle exceptional reach requirements, while 40-ton excavators take on the repetitive earthmoving around them.
Articulated dump trucks for reclaimed and uneven ground
:quality(50)/www.makana.com/unsafe/fit-in/0x600/filters:quality(50)/www.makana.com/embedded-images/04-articulated-dump-trucks-for-reclaimed-and-uneven-ground.png)
Reclamation work creates a major hauling requirement. Fill, rock, excavated material and aggregates must move between loading areas, temporary stockpiles and placement zones long before the final road surface exists.
That is where an articulated dump truck for infrastructure work can offer an advantage over a road-going tipper. Articulated haulers are built to retain traction and stability across uneven or softer off-road surfaces.
The Volvo A40G articulated dump truck carries approximately 39 tons and uses a body of around 24 m³. Its six-wheel-drive articulated configuration is designed for large earthmoving, quarry and infrastructure work where haul roads may still be developing.
The Volvo A40G technical specifications also show a maximum speed of around 57 km/h and a Volvo D13F engine producing roughly 465 hp, giving the A40G the combination of payload and mobility needed for repeated bulk-material cycles.
For large reclaimed areas, the important advantage is not simply carrying 40 tons. It is being able to move that payload before the site has become a finished road.
LGP crawler dozers for reclaimed land
:quality(50)/www.makana.com/unsafe/fit-in/0x600/filters:quality(50)/www.makana.com/embedded-images/05-lgp-crawler-dozers-for-reclaimed-land.png)
Excavators dig material and dump trucks move it, but reclamation also needs machines that can spread and shape fill across newly formed ground.
Low Ground Pressure crawler dozers are particularly relevant here because wider track shoes distribute machine weight over a larger surface area.
Makana’s current crawler dozers for sale in UAE include LGP configurations such as the Cat D6R2 LGP. At around 22 tons, this configuration uses 900 mm track shoes, giving it a considerably wider footprint than a standard-track D6R. It produces roughly 210 hp and carries a blade around 4 m wide.
On imported fill, loose sand and reclaimed ground, that wider footprint can help a dozer spread material while reducing ground pressure compared with a narrower-track configuration.
For Mid-Island Parkway-type works, a D6-class LGP dozer fits between smaller finishing dozers and much heavier production machines such as the D8 class.
Wheel loaders for rock, aggregate and fill
:quality(50)/www.makana.com/unsafe/fit-in/0x600/filters:quality(50)/www.makana.com/embedded-images/06-wheel-loaders-for-rock-aggregate-and-fill.png)
Phase One includes 150,000 m² of protective rock covering around the reclaimed land. Large volumes of rock and aggregate create continuous loading work at stockpiles, staging areas and truck loading points.
This is where wheel loaders in UAE become part of the core fleet. The Cat 980K wheel loader is a useful example for high-volume infrastructure work. It operates at approximately 31 tons and uses a bucket of around 5.4 m³, backed by roughly 369 hp from its Cat C13 ACERT engine.
According to the Cat 980 technical specifications, the 980K also has a tipping load of about 19 tons. That positions it above smaller general-purpose loaders when contractors need repeated loading of aggregate, rock, road base or bulk fill.
The excavator may produce the material, but the loader keeps stockpiles, trucks and processing areas moving.
Motor graders for road formation and final levels
:quality(50)/www.makana.com/unsafe/fit-in/0x600/filters:quality(50)/www.makana.com/embedded-images/07-motor-graders-for-road-formation-and-final-levels.png)
Once reclamation and bulk earthworks establish the corridor, the project becomes increasingly similar to a major road construction job.
Motor graders for road construction shape formation levels, road base, crowns, shoulders and drainage slopes before final compaction and paving.
The Cat 140H motor grader remains a practical example in this class. At about 19 tons, it uses a moldboard around 4.3 m wide and is designed for road construction, site preparation and surface shaping.
Its size makes it suitable for sustained grading across long open sections rather than the smaller-scale finishing jobs handled by compact graders. Buyers can also review the wider Cat 140 technical specifications covering the 140H and related 140-series models.
For an eight-lane road corridor, consistent formation over long distances becomes a production requirement rather than a minor finishing task.
Tandem rollers for the final road layers
:quality(50)/www.makana.com/unsafe/fit-in/0x600/filters:quality(50)/www.makana.com/embedded-images/08-tandem-rollers-for-the-final-road-layers.png)
Compaction follows grading through several stages, and different rollers may be used for soil, aggregate base and asphalt.
For the paved surface itself, tandem rollers for sale in UAE are designed to provide the smooth, uniform compaction required across large asphalt areas.
One example currently listed by Makana is the Hamm HD+ 140 VV tandem roller. It is a roughly 13-ton double-drum roller with drums approximately 2.14 m wide.
The Hamm HD140 technical specifications show impact force reaching 159 kN, making the model suitable for large road surfaces where contractors need broad drum coverage and high compaction output.
On a project with four lanes in each direction, productivity across wide paved sections matters just as much as compaction force.
Tunnel and marine works need more than earthmoving machines
Mid-Island Parkway also includes precast concrete roof panels, underground construction and marine works. DMT says precast roof panels were produced off site to reduce construction time, while the project also used on-site scaffolding.
That expands the equipment requirement beyond excavators and road machinery. Cranes can handle larger structural lifts, telehandlers can move materials around staging areas, pumps can support water management, while generators, compressors and lighting equipment keep underground and temporary work areas operating.
Exact lifting capacity depends on the weight of individual components, lift radius and construction methodology, so these support machines need to be selected around the work package rather than the overall project value.
Phase Two will keep heavy equipment demand diversified
The next stage expands the Mid-Island Parkway by another 14.5 km from Umm Yifeenah Island through Bilrimaid and Samaliyah Islands toward Sas Al Nakhl, Al Raha Beach and Khalifa City.
DMT says Phase Two will again have four lanes in each direction, but the construction scope also introduces marine bridges, elevated flyovers and another advanced underwater road tunnel.
That means future works will continue to combine several equipment markets: excavation, reclamation, off-road hauling, road construction, lifting and marine construction.
For equipment buyers, it is a useful example of why heavy equipment machinery for large UAE infrastructure projects cannot be selected only by tonnage. The ground condition, reach, hauling route, material volume and construction stage all change which machine class delivers the highest productivity.
Source heavy equipment for UAE infrastructure projects
Makana currently lists machines across the same categories required for major infrastructure fleets, including long boom and large excavators, articulated dump trucks, crawler dozers, wheel loaders, motor graders and compaction equipment.
Buyers looking for a used excavator for sale or other used construction machinery can review 75+ point inspection reports, operational videos and 360° machine views before purchase, with in-person inspection also available at Makana’s Dubai yard.
When a required machine or configuration is not currently listed, Makana’s machinery procurement service can source individual machines or a wider project fleet through its supplier network.
